Gurunath’s core competencies are his in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of physics, their applications and modes of course delivery adaptable to a variety of learning styles. He has a proven ability to explain and demonstrate the essential problem solving techniques in physics. He is an effective communicator and has good planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills. His knowledge of using current technologies to convey online course content and in the classroom and advanced knowledge of computer applications to source online applications and online learning materials are added advantages.
Gurunath believes in conceptual learning and is strictly against rote learning. He says the concept or problem has to be understood to the core. The student has to be able to analyze and apply the fundamental formula and not use short cuts as is the tendency nowadays. Gurunath also believes in all-round learning and personally devotes at least half an hour a week to current events and General Knowledge sessions. This is because he believes that students should learn social responsibility and civic sense. “Teaching is not just dumping subject knowledge,” he says. “A good teacher should mould the character and ability of the student and teach him moral values and right thinking with logic and reason.”
Gurunath is also an advocator of the outdoors and fitness. An outdoors man himself, he loves adventure and the wild and going for long bike rides in hilly places – he has personally travelled from Leh to Ladakh on his Bullet. Hence he tries to encourage his students to take up physical exercise on the playground. A sound body leads to a sound mind, he feels.
